Land & Topographic Surveys
To obtain precise measurements, we use GPS survey equipment in order to locate fixed points of an area of land. These points are used as reference markers, and they are used to demonstrate the height and base of the specified area. With these markers you can produce a CAD (computer-aided-design) drawing, which illustrates a highly detailed and accurate topographical map of your land.

Measured Building Surveys
Our choice of technology, laser scanning, is quick, precise and unobtrusive. We can carry out our work without disturbance to the fabric of the building and with minimal disturbance to the occupants. At South West Surveys we cover all of the UK, with many jobs being local to us in Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham and Gloucester. We work on a range of projects, from small properties to all types of industrial buildings, warehouses, retail spaces, historic and listed buildings.

BIM Surveys & 3D Modelling
Models can be produced from 3D point clouds or 2D drawings. These can be supplied to us or we can visit your site and deliver a full service from the initial site survey right through to the final 3D model.
Any building can be modelled from the simplest of dwellings to the most complex historical building.
3D models have many uses; they make fantastic marketing tools for developers and help local authorities visualize future developments. 3D models also help architects to see their latest creations in a real-world environment.
BIM (building information model) is becoming increasingly popular, especially with government projects as recent advances in legislation has meant large growth in the number of 3D models needed, this makes our BIM models a great resource for other professional parties to take forward.

UAV / Drone Surveys
Drones are a fantastic tool to our surveying arsenal, collecting data from otherwise out of reach places and areas of high risk such as railways, motorways, dilapidated structures or small islands. Covering large areas of land, from open farmland to woodland, our lidar system can penetrate tree canopies and map the ground beneath. Drones can provide you with a wealth of data including plant health and vigour, weed location and density, precise area measurements and elevation changes across your land.
Using our 42mp camera we can provide a set of jpg images, which can also be supplied as a rich 3d pointcloud. This can be for sites in their entirety, or to complete pointcloud datasets where a terrestrial laser scanner would not reach.

Laser Scanning Technology
It works by shining the laser onto the object and then collecting the data from another sensor such as a camera. This creates point cloud data with millions of 3D XYZ coordinates that can be placed together to build an accurate survey and model of the building.

Aerial Lidar & Mobile Mapping Surveys
We use multi-rotor drones and have the ability to mount our sensors on vehicles.
One of our professionally trained and experienced UAV pilots and surveyors will carry out a LiDAR survey for the mapping of land, property and infrastructure. LiDAR surveys enable us to produce Digital Terrain Models which is often unachievable with photogrammetry methods, especially around vegetated areas.
LiDAR gives the operator the ability to rapidly survey both small-scale and large-scale areas in a more cost-effective way. A LiDAR system can often be much safer to use when surveying areas such as highways, railway lines and powerlines. A mobile mapping system eliminates any risks during the survey and can allow data to be captured remotely.

Bathymetry Survey
We use a multitude of data collection methods to produce the best possible results, these range from total stations, GPS, LIDAR & USV (unmanned surface vehicles) to multibeam echosounders.
Using these specialist surveying equipment, we can accurately plot the positions of watercourses, watercourse structures and nearby topographic detail. These surveys will be used for a variety of applications such as planning, design work, maintenance, flood risk assessment, ecology management and hydraulic modelling.

Utility Surveys
We can offer full utility mapping surveys, drainage surveys & CCTV inspections, utilising the latest ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic location (EML) equipment technologies.
Our surveys include, but are not limited to, accurate depth and location data for cables, pipes, ducts and drainage routes which will be positioned to OSGB36 and ODN height.
Utility surveys can be plotted on top of a new or existing South West Surveys topographic survey, or as a stand-alone service.
Our utility surveys can also be provided as a 3D DWG file or as a Revit model.
In some cases when a full utility survey isn’t required, South West Surveys can also offer a desktop utility survey. We can source relevant records from utility providers and supply this information in a single document.
For an additional cost, we can provide coal mining and tin mining reports.

About us
We've tackled a broad spectrum of projects, spanning from residential expansions and refurbishments to notable heritage endeavours. Our capabilities include crafting as-built 3D models for BIM or visualisation objectives. Leveraging our expertise, we've successfully modelled pump houses, including intricate pipework, and conducted laser scans of listed statues, subsequently transforming them into robust mesh models for replication.
South West Surveys collaborates with numerous repeat clients, including architects, urban planners, consulting engineers, surveyors, and private individuals.
Our Services Include:
Land & Topographic Surveys
A Topographical or 'topo' survey, often referred to as a land survey, offers a precise depiction of both natural and artificial elements within a designated region. These surveys typically employ specialised surveying tools capable of accurately measuring angles and distances.
Measured Building Surveys
Our technology of choice, laser scanning, is rapid, accurate, and discreet. We conduct our operations with minimal disruption to both the building's structure and its occupants. South West Surveys serves clients throughout the UK, with a focus on local projects in Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham, and Gloucester. Our scope of work spans various projects, encompassing small residential properties, industrial buildings, warehouses, retail spaces, as well as historic and listed structures.
BIM Surveys & 3D Modelling
3D models serve various purposes, serving as excellent marketing aids for developers and aiding local authorities in envisioning forthcoming developments. Architects benefit from 3D models by visualising their designs in real-world settings. The rise in popularity of BIM (Building Information Modelling), particularly in government projects due to legislative advancements, has led to a surge in demand for 3D models, making our BIM models valuable resources for other professionals involved in the projects.
UAV / Drone Surveys
Drones significantly enhance our surveying capabilities by gathering data from inaccessible or high-risk locations like railways, motorways, deteriorating structures, or remote islands. Our lidar system, deployed over vast terrains ranging from farmland to forests, can penetrate tree cover to map the underlying terrain. Drones offer extensive data, including insights into plant health, weed distribution, precise area measurements, and changes in elevation across your property.
Laser Scanning Technology
Laser scanning technology is utilised in construction to conduct precise surveys of buildings or land. Also referred to as High Definition Surveying (HDS), it employs laser beams to capture comprehensive details of structures and generate a 360-degree photo or plan. This process involves projecting the laser onto the object and gathering data from another sensor, such as a camera. The result is point cloud data comprising millions of 3D XYZ coordinates, which can be assembled to construct an accurate survey and model of the building.
… And more.
We provide surveys of exceptional precision and meticulous detail. We take pride in our work and derive enjoyment from tackling unique and challenging projects. Our surveys are competitively priced and completed promptly. Whether you prefer our predefined specifications or customised services tailored to your needs, we accommodate your requirements with flexibility and professionalism.
Many of our projects are situated in the South West, Wales, and along the M4 Corridor, extending across the Midlands. Nevertheless, we collaborate with numerous prominent clients on projects throughout the United Kingdom.
South West Surveys eagerly anticipate your contact.
