Graceful arch structure permits large spans typically up to 35m between arch feet, although larger spans possible to create generous clearance envelopes, suitable for navigational rivers and highways.
Deck may also be suspended below arch. Width to client requirements, normally up to 4.0m.

Specifically designed to provide an elegant low profile all timber solution, particularly for larger spans of 25m to 40m using attractive and durable Ekki Hardwood Timbers.
Truss girder design maximises rigidity. Allows parapet to be contained within the height of the truss.

The truss members have neat morticed joints rather than unsightly exposed angles or plates.

FRP Composite Bridges
The new Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Composite bridge can be equipped with different sensors that measure for example, the temperature for gritting and salting in winter months, it’s own frequency, deformation and applied loadings.
Upon reading the sensors the real time stresses, strains, performance and condition of the structure can immediately be seen. It can also be established if the bridge is being overloaded.
These measurements are transmitted via a Wi-Fi connection to a computer. The dashboard of the database allows this information to be tracked live. These sensors can, at extra cost, be built into the composite bridges.

Bridge Parapets
The choice of parapets may be influenced by a number of different factors, for which we can offer technical advice. SHS has developed a range of standard parapets, which will suit most situations and can also produce many different styles tailored to individual preferences.
Bespoke Parapets

N1 Vehicle Parapets
SHS can provide hardwood vehicle containment parapets to Highway N1 standards. These extremely attractive and durable parapets are ideally suited to rural areas.
The 3 rail hardwood parapet design has been impact tested by MIRA with a 1500kg saloon car travelling at 80km/h at an angle of 20°.
There are parts of the country where for various reasons metal containment parapets seem out of character with the surrounding area and this is where Sarum Hardwood Structures now have an ideal solution.

Decking
Our hardwood timber decking can be offered with a range of surface finishes and is generally laid with a 5mm gap between boards to assist drainage.
Our bridges are supplied with slip-resistant grooved hardwood deckplanks as standard.
The deck thickness, width and grooved profile will be subject to our final design layout and the choice of timber species required.

Steel Bridges
SHS Steel Bridges offer an ideal alternative solution to timber bridges for spans in excess of 9 metres.
For customers who desire an all steel solution for their project we have a selection of bridge types with spans ranging from a simple 9 metre steel beam design up to an 80 − 90 metre Cable Stay Bridge.
Our Engineers are very experienced with designing and working with all types of steel bridge structures including the popular Truss Girder design.
You will see from the photographs below that they are very versatile, being suitable for pedestrian only structures, pedestrians and cyclists, equestrian and can also be designed to accommodate vehicle loads.
We can also advise on bespoke solutions if you have a conceptual ideal and would like to discuss the possibilities with our Engineers. The bridges are generally supplied galvanised but can also be supplied painted or powder coated in a colour to suit the client or surroundings.
