PRESS RELEASE Balsall Common Primary School in Solihull, West Midlands, has completely transformed its nursery garden thanks to Sovereign Play Equipment and funding from the Parent and Teacher Association and John Shepherd Select – a leading Midlands residential property specialist, which has an office in Balsall village.

Sovereign, one of the UK’s leading playground providers, was contracted to design and build an outdoor area that would encourage the 80 children who attend the school’s purpose-built nursery to engage more in outdoor physical and imaginative play, as well as providing teaching staff with an outdoor learning environment. Prior to its involvement, the garden area was unappealing with a limited range of equipment and a plain grey path running around its perimeter.

There was patchy grass and large areas of exposed mud where the grass had worn away, which made the area unusable during wet weather. The school wanted the area to be available to the children for as much of the year as possible, so the old grass was removed, the area was levelled and wet pour all-weather surfacing was laid down in primary colours; red, blue, green and yellow.

The surfacing also features yellow fish against a blue background, which highlights the newly installed water play area. To brighten up the path, Sovereign applied white road markings and traffic lights, against a black background, to help develop the children’s road safety awareness and also stimulate plenty of imaginative play.

To provide the opportunity for outdoor nature lessons, sensory planters were built to the side of the original path, which the children have been using to plant a variety of fruit and vegetables. Music boards, a range of play boards, water and sand tables, a polytunnel and brightly coloured red and white mushroom-shaped seats were also installed.

The seating was purposefully placed in a shaded area to provide children with some relief during hot weather. Commenting on the new play area, Kate Clamp, Nursery Manager at the school, said: “Our garden is wonderful and the children have an amazing time. It has had a huge impact on our outdoor learning.”

The children are now able to use the outdoor area in wet, as well as dry weather, and are enjoying the additional and varied sensory stimulation that the area now provides.
