Iron and Steel Blacking at Room Temperature
23 October 2008
An inexpensive and convenient process for blacking iron and steel at room temperature is manufactured and marketed by Blackfast Chemicals.
The new iron and steel blacking process was developed by Blackfast Chemicals for safe and reliable use in a metal working environment, thus eliminating the need for metal parts to leave the production facility for finishing by an outside contractor. The immediate benefits to the manufacture are cost savings, no production delays, in-house quality control and flexibility. Unlike many conventional methods of blacking it is non-hazardous and easy to use.
Cost savings are achieved because the process requires no expensive capital investment; plastic tanks will do. Short dwell time allows rapid throughput of production. Solution control is simple, replenishment is accomplished by topping up when the solutions become weak and coverage per litre is high. Dumping is not necessary as with other processes.
The process is very convenient and can be located without the need for complicated ventilation or control procedures. The solutions are safe, reliable and easy to maintain.
A uniform black finish of steel components is today extremely popular and adds considerably to the perceived value of the finished article. This combined with the unique quality that the component’s dimensions are not altered and an even colour is achieved over blind holes and threads makes it an attractive proposition for any precision engineer.
