Hörmann's Shelter Wall System has HIt the Mark
23 October 2008
Hörmann UK’s revolutionary design of shelter wall has been installed at a new 525,000 sq ft warehouse and distribution facility in Corby.
The 28 acre Mitchell Road site was funded by The UK Logistics Fund and jointly developed with Rugby based Greatline Developments ltd. The UK Logistics Fund is the UK’s largest Distribution Warehouse fund and a joint venture between Hermes Real Estate and Legal & General Property.
Corby was identified as an important emerging location within the distribution warehousing industry because of good labour availability and a location that provides easy access to various major motorways and all of the east coast ports.
Winvic Construction was brought on board as the main contractor to carry out the construction of the site and when deciding on which loading bay manufacturer to use, Winvic opted for the quality engineering and service offered by Hörmann UK.
While Winvic has specified Hörmann’s loading bay equipment in the past, this project marks the first time that the construction firm has agreed to have Hörmann’s unique design of precast dock and shelter wall installed.
Tim Reeve, design manager at Winvic Construction, was sold on the idea of the shelter wall after visiting Hörmann’s precast factory in Poland: “The manufacturing process and the end product were very impressive. This particular design offers a number of key benefits which makes it quicker, easier and cheaper to install.”
Hörmann UK’s projects director, Tom Langley, commented: “We have found it extremely useful to take clients over to the factory in Poland to get a first hand look at the advantages of our precast product and how it is manufactured.
“Our unique precast dock and shelter wall system is used all over Europe and now that we have introduced it to the UK there is a growing interest in this product.”
The shelter wall forms the front wall of the building above the dock area. With Hörmann’s design the wall is made up of three pieces which eliminates the requirement for any additional steel. The top section connects to the main columns tying in the middle and lower pieces. A one piece design is offered by our competitors, but this requires extra steel to offer central support to each bay, adding cost and installation time to the project.
Hörmann also installed 50 complete loading bays at the site. The dock leveller of choice was the HLS-2 -20-25 set in an FR frame model type. The FR self-supporting frame is closed at the sides and installed using a precast biscuit design, whereby the finished floor is poured over the top of the biscuit, casting the top part of the dock leveller frame into the building floor for a secure and smooth finish.
