New Wood Lane Underground Station
19 November 2008
Stocksigns, incorporating Burnham Signs, the London Underground (LU) approved enameller and long-standing manufacturer of signs for Underground stations, has completed signs for the new Wood Lane station.
Wood Lane on the Hammersmith & City Line has now opened. Stocksigns was contracted by Costain Plc to deliver the signage package at the Station, opposite BBC Television Centre, in Shepherd’s Bush. The project was completed on schedule in October and forms part of LU’s major programme of renewal and TfL's Investment Programme. The work is essential to provide for London's growing transport needs now, and in the future.
The signage package included Vitreous Enamel Primary, Supplementary and Door signs including the iconic Roundel signs (pictured).
“Being involved with Costain, the main contractors, and Ian Ritchie, the architect, right from the beginning of the project allowed Stocksigns to plan the manufacture of the signs and manage the complicated installation with accuracy allowing for demand changes as the project developed” said Roger Eke, Stocksigns Project Manager.
Wood Lane is the first new station to be built on an existing line (not on a new line or extension) for more than 70 years. The last one was Elm Park Tube station on the District line in 1935. It brings the number of stations on the Hammersmith & City line to 29. A Tube station previously occupying the site was known as Uxbridge Road station until it closed in October 1940. Nearly 46 million people travel each year on the Hammersmith & City line with 149,405 travelling on weekdays. It is predicted that as many as 6,665 people will use the new Wood Lane station between noon and 3pm on Saturdays once the nearby Westfield London shopping centre opens.
