All About Smoke Control
11 November 2016
Axair Fans has been actively working within Smoke Control over the past year, working with consultants and fire engineers to deliver an effective smoke control system.
This week we thought what better time to recap on some of the top questions we should know about Smoke Control.1. In the event of a fire, what are the main risks associated with Smoke?
The main risks associated with smoke are;
- Toxicity; including a lack of oxygen, inhalation of toxic gases and suffocating gases.
- Heat; including internal and external burns from direct contact or radiation from hot smoke.
- Irritation; including respiratory conditions, skin and eye irritations.
- Visibility; hindering location of the source of fire and location of escape routes.
Various factors including the building geometry, control philosophy and integration with other types of fire safety systems need to be considered when designing a smoke control system.
3. Why is standard EN12101-3:2015 important for Axair to consider when designing a smoke control system?
EN12101-3:2015 is the standard specifically regarding mechanical ventilators. This would determine how Axair can directly contribute to the system components and adhere to the correct specification to ensure effective ventilation and control. There are two main types of fans suitable for smoke control systems; those for use inside the fire zone and those for use outside of the fire zone.
4. What goals should be achieved in an effective smoke control system?
System goals can include smoke buoyancy (called the smoke and smoke free zone), smoke extraction (including air changes and extraction rates), horizontal ventilation (if smoke buoyancy cannot be achieved) and effective pressurisation of evacuation routes (by setting a pressure differential in a protected area or route).
5. How can Axair help with achieving goals and system design?
Axair can assist from system design to supplying the correct and effective fans and ancillaries in addition to carrying out CFD studies and technical support during the project. Contact us on 01782 349 430 for further assistance
