It has been a turbulent week at the top worldwide – have you managed to keep abreast of the changes in government leadership?

Three Presidents were elected:
  • Alexander Van der Bellen defeated his far-right opponent in Austria in the repeat of the second round, and will take office on 26 January.
  • Adama Barrow, candidate of a seven-party opposition alliance, beat Gambia’s 22-year ruler Yahya Jammeh, and will also take office in January.
  • Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev sealed his accession to Uzbekistan’s presidency, which had begun in September following the death of Islam Karimov, who had ruled since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

A royal accession:

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand accepted the throne on 1 December after a period of mourning for his father, King Bhumibol, who died on 13 October. His coronation is not expected until late 2017.

Three PMs resigned:

Matteo Renzi quit on 5 December, following Italy’s referendum that defeated his constitutional reform package aimed at improving Italy’s political stability. He was requested to stay on for a week until the budget is passed by the parliament.

Manuel Valls stepped down on 6 December to contest France’s 2017 presidential election, and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve was named to succeed him.

John Key, prime minister of New Zealand since 2008, announced his resignation for family reasons, to take effect on 12 December.

A government fell:

The opposition left-wing Adesso.sm alliance claimed a majority in San Marino’s run-off elections on 4 December.
