Royal Albert Wharf, Newham London
23 March 2017
London’s Royal Docks – comprising the historic Royal Albert Dock, Royal Victoria Dock and King George V Dock – formed the largest enclosed docks in the world in their heyday of the early 20th century.
The docks suffered a steady decline from the 1960s onwards though, before closing to commercial traffic in 1981. The water area at the docks remains at over 100 hectares, with over 12 miles of quaysides, offering immense opportunities for commercial, retail, residential, leisure and community development.Royal Albert Wharf is a new predominantly residential development at the very eastern end on the docks, built around the Royal Albert Basin and its historic Edwardian pump house. Whilst the basin offers an attractive waterside setting, the significant drop from the quayside to the water level does present a potential health and safety risk.
The decorative and historic character of the Brunel cast iron bollards made them the prefect choice for demarcation of the quayside, with chains added between to discourage people from stepping too close to the edge.
Furnitubes also supplied the more contemporary–styled Fordham bench seating and Zenith litter bins and bollards for the external spaces in and around the new housing and retail buildings, encouraging community interaction in the public areas of this burgeoning new development.
