Boyko Borissov returns as Bulgarian PM

The defeat of the CEDB candidate in the 2016 presidential election precipitated the resignation on 14 November of the existing CEDB and RB minority government.
After three party leaders had successively returned the mandate to form a new government, early elections were then called Read more…as required by the constitution.(The outgoing president had first offered the mandate on 2 December to outgoing prime minister Boyko Borissov, in office from July 2009 until 21 February 2013 and again from 5 November 2014, but he immediately returned it. The leader of the second-placed BSP also immediately returned the mandate offered to him on 7 December.

Incoming President Radev named former speaker Ognyan Gerdzhikov as caretaker prime minister on 24 January 2017, tasked with overseeing the run-up to early elections on 26 March. Gerdzhikov's cabinet, comprising a few party members but mostly technocrats, was announced the following day and took office on 27 January. Following the March 2017 elections, the CEDB signed a coalition agreement with the UP on 27 April and Borissov was given the mandate the same day. To bolster its slim majority, the coalition was to be backed in the Assembly by Will. A new cabinet was announced on 3 May and was approved by the Assembly the following day.
