Are you GDPR ready?

15 December 2017

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in the next year.

It is a European requirement and whatever happens on Brexit, it is certain that the UK will still be part of the EU in 2018.

THE GDPR applies to all personal data – just like the UK Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA).  Any information that is considered personal under the DPA will also be considered to be so under the GDPR. However, the definition in the GDPR is more detailed – referring to information such as genetic material as well as written data.

The legislation highlights how changes in technology have changed the way data is collected by noting that online identifiers, such as IP addresses, can be considered personal data. Most businesses and organisations hold personal data that must be protected under the legislation. This obviously requires your data systems to be secure but also all your hard copy documents  containing personal information.

According to SC Magazine, the leading publication on Information Security, 73% of companies are increasing their spending on Cyber Security. It goes on to enumerate all of the ways in which your data can still be compromised. Price Waterhouse Coopers also point out the huge amounts spent on Cyber Security and the fact that most companies fail to see a return on this investment.

KEEP YOUR HARD COPY DOCUMENTS LOCKED UP SAFE – IT IS EASY, QUICK & INEXPENSIVE

How much does your company spend on securing its data online and how does this compare with your spending on more routine physical aspects of security – like ensuring that sensitive documents are correctly filed and that desks and filing cabinets are securely locked?
For a fraction of the cost in time and money spent on Cyberprotection, why not ensure that your hard copy documents are safe by checking that all pedestals, cupboards and cabinets are kept locked when not in use.
