Peter Cox Masonry Anchors stabilise listed property

06 July 2007

Masonry anchors in action

The Newcastle branch of Peter Cox Ltd has demonstrated the versatility of Cintec cementitious masonry anchors in the refurbishment of a listed building in Sunderland for clients Sunniside Partnership.

Anchors up to 2 metres in length have been installed to achieve three objectives – 1) to stabilise the brick front wall of the building, 2) to act as lateral restraints tying masonry to the internal floor construction and 3) to stitch serious internal wall cracks.

This type of anchor consists of a stainless steel bar surrounded by a flexible fabric sock into which a rapid setting cementitious grout is injected under pressure to form a strong mechanical and chemical bond within the body of the masonry.

The technique is viewed with favour by conservation bodies (in this instance English Heritage) because it uses materials which are sympathetic to the original masonry. It was also found possible in this application to conceal many of the fixings from view.

Bricks were removed on the front wall before the anchors were installed and then reinstated later hiding the anchor heads to leave the external appearance untouched. With the lateral restraints the walls were able to be drilled from the inside. For the internal stitching the Cintec ties were installed in raked out mortar joints extending either side of the brickwork fractures.
