Twickenhams' Total Rugby surface exceeds safety requirements
24 April 2009
The artificial surface for the warm up area, installed by Tigerturf, has surpassed the RFU criteria and IRB regulation 22 for Critical Fall Height.
The standard is set for safety at 1.3m fall height and the TigerTurf Total Rugby surface, which has been independently tested by Labosport, has a safety fall height of 2m, outperforming the standard by 35%. This means that line outs, scrums and tackles can be properly practiced with a much reduced risk of injury.
With the Six Nations about to begin and with the worst snowfall Britain has seen for twenty years, the importance of being able to warm up safely and have access to safe training ground no matter what the weather is at the forefront of rugby enthusiasts minds.
The Total Rugby surface has two unique and exclusive yarns with complementary characteristics which together create a surface that offers essential safety for the player, unprecedented playing characteristics and outstanding durability. Delivering the highest standards of performance and safety over an extended period of time is what sets this product apart from the rest. The surface has an exposed pile of 20mm which camouflages the infill so the pitch plays and looks as natural as possible
Simon Winman, Head of Funding & Facilities for the Rugby Football Union, said
“Twickenham was looking for a playing system that had been specifically developed for the game, being able to withstand very heavy use and assist in skills training and development. This pioneering surface is the latest boost for the stadium, which has already seen the significant redevelopment of the South Stand bringing standards up to the highest level. It is this investment in excellence which makes Twickenham the proud home of England Rugby.”
With financial support from the Rugby Football Union, a number of clubs across England have benefited from the TigerTurf rugby system, providing quality training and playing facility all year round to help improve standards, develop players and introduce the game to a wider and often younger audience.
With the WRU determined to keep on a winning streak they are installing the TigerTurf Total Rugby system into their training ground this spring.
