Dental charity welcomes scrubs donation
09 January 2020
We were delighted when Kimberley Rossiter, a practice manager at a Oradi – Dental Care Group in Wellingborough, got in touch asking for help with a charity to trip to Africa she was involved in. It was really exciting to hear about Kimberley’s plans and we agreed to donate some scrubs for the team to wear on their travels. Here, in our latest guest blog, Kimberley explains more about her charitable work and Grahame Gardner’s involvement.
Back in May we heard from Kimberley Rossiter, a practice manager at Oradi – Dental Care Group in Wellingborough, who had got in touch asking for help with a charity trip to Africa she was involved in. It was really exciting to hear about Kimberley’s plans and we agreed to donate some scrubs for the team to wear on their travels.Well, now she is back on UK soil after experiencing a life changing African adventure and here, in out latest guest blog, Kimberley gives us the low down of her trip. I am finally, back from Kenya and what a life changing, eye opening, emotional, and extremely rewarding trip it has been. It was a stark reminder that 70% of the world’s population do not have access to dental care and 2.5 billion people in the world suffer from tooth ache so we were so pleased to be able to do something to help people who were in pain. I was part of a Dentaid team of three dentists, three dental therapists and four dental nurses who worked with a local dentist to visit local schools, slums, old people’s homes and medical centres.
Dental health is often not considered as a priority in developing countries, most only have one dentist to treat approximately 500,000 people and toothpaste is considered a luxury so we were treating patients who have been suffering for months, sometimes years, of dental pain. We educated the children, and even some adults, on how to brush, why you need to brush and gave tips on diet and dental hygiene.
The clinicians we went with also trained the local dentist to help people once we had gone and we left them with three suitcases of equipment to enable them to run their practices. During my time in Kenya we managed to help 1,763 people of which 1,307 were children. 610 teeth were removed, 323 teeth were filled, 1,170 oral health instructions and demonstrations were provided, 322 people had a scale and polish, 353 had fluoride applied, 104 had fissure sealants and 164 lucky people did not require any treatment at all! It is clear from the numbers that there is a huge need and urgency for dental care within developing countries and I am so proud to be someone who has made a difference! This is something I would do again and, if possible, I would encourage any dental care practitioners to support this wonderful charity.
We had a fantastic team on the mission and it was lovely to meet people who are passionate about helping others alongside doing a job they love. Many thanks again to Grahame Gardner for providing the clothing for our team to wear. The scrubs were fitting, light and perfect for the trip and weather conditions.
