Linear actuation for Turbo Compressors
04 August 2009
To ensure optimum operating efficiency, the Howden Donkin integrally geared turbo compressors come with a choice of control systems to provide infinitely variable air flow in combination with a simple constant speed motor.
All rely on the effective actuation of two sets of vanes that influence the air flow into the compressor according to process performance. This is an operation that requires high forces at slow speeds and for this reason the Mini range of actuators, from Framo Morat were selected for the job.Three types of controls all feature the Framo Morat Mini actuator as part of their assemblies. On the inlet guide vane control assembly (IGV) it adjusts the stainless steel guide vanes around the bore of the inlet branch to pre-rotate the air before it enters the impeller. In addition, on the variable diffuser vane control assembly (VVD), the linear actuator controls the movement of stainless steel aerofoil vanes. As its name suggests the combined control enhances the advantages of both the IGV and VVD options.
Six models in the Framo Morat Mini range are supplied for the task by UK factory representative, R. A. Rodriguez. The application requires the actuators to make small and frequent movements in both directions and at a low speed of 2mm/sec at a maximum force of typically 5000N. The Mini is the ideal choice as it uses a powerful coaxial motor to achieve the required stroke in minimum space. Models are supplied to Howden Donkin with 3ph 400V 50Hz drive motors for the application and in stroke lengths from 100 to 250mm.
Fine tuning of the air flow is thanks to an integral potentiometer on the Mini. This confirms the absolute position of the actuator so that maximum operational efficiency can be achieved. A number of features ensure the Mini’s reliable operation even in extreme conditions such as heat dust and moisture.
These include a thermally protected motor, life time lubrication and integral safety switches. This quality is important for Howden Donkin compressors as they are used in a wide range of arduous applications. Typical examples are sulphur recovery in the petrochemical industry, industrial effluent treatment, furnace air supply and fermentation in pharmaceutical and yeast production.
