Stay Healthy, Stay Secure: Wear a Mask, Secure IT Systems
12 October 2020
Were you working from home as of 26th March? Perhaps you’re still working from home and have become a little more savvy in terms of cyber security.
Today we’re delving back into the art of phishing. With a significant increase in fraudulent emails throughout lockdown, now is the time to ‘lock your systems down’ too. What is Phishing?
Phishing usually occurs in email form. Hackers aim to gain your confidence using various methods in order to steal important information such as passwords and financial details. Strategies include various levels of deception as follows:
● Posing as a legitimate company
● Using your name to infer a level of confidence
● Effectively impersonating your seniors
“Don’t get hooked by an email scam”.
For business owners and higher management, avoidance comes down to not only having the correct security systems in place, but through training your team effectively.
Network Security & Lockdown
Whilst your team are busying in the office they should be connected to a secure network. This will include all the relevant features in keeping spam and phishing emails to an absolute minimum. Unfortunately, what many companies overlooked come the end of March was the less stringent networks the majority of us use at home. Make way for the hackers!
Recent Survey
Opinion Matters carried out a survey using 251 CIOs, CISOs & CTOs from UK organisations. Take a look at what they found:
- 98% of companies saw an increase in cyber attacks across the most recent 12 month period
- 99% stated they had experienced a breach
- 63 breaches was the average number per company
- 96% of all companies surveyed agreed cyber attacks were becoming more sophisticated
And you thought this was the bad news;
With such high numbers admitting to increased, more significant cyber attacks, just 6% of the companies decided to increase IT Security budgets for the following year.
