Glass Shortages

2020 has seen the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown countries worldwide and has had a detrimental effect on the global economy.
In January 2020 China went into lockdown, seeing its economy plummet. As the UK followed with its own lockdown in March, the Chinese economy was returning, gaining rapid momentum by May and seeing double-figure price increases in flat glass.Whilst the world was in lockdown, float-glass manufacturers kept their lines running due to the cumbersome processes of starting and stopping the production line. However, many were putting products back into cullet, impacting on quality and availability.

Since the easing of lockdown, the rapid growth in commercial projects has put significant pressure on the glass supply chain. Both the UK and Europe has seen a post lockdown boom in demand, the question is could glass shortages continue into 2021 and how will this affect prices?
The roll-on effect is that glass manufacturers have already seen a surge in latent demand, along with the production disruption during the lockdown, a significant increase in price has already been prompted.
There has never been a better time to protect glass, preventing the need for replacements due to scratching and other damage. Glass shortages could have a massive impact on the construction industry trying to sign-off on sites. Any damages caused during construction could have immense effects on completion times.
