Cistermiser’s DFD urinal flushing valve announced as Water Saving Commercial Product of the Year at the Energy Saving Awards

The water saving capabilities of Cistermiser’s Direct Flush Discreet (DFD) control valve for mains-fed urinals have been further recognised, with the product winning its second water efficiency award this year. The DFD was the winner of the Water Saving Commercial Product of the Year category of the Energy Saving Awards 2023, held on December 1 in London.
The DFD from Cistermiser, a leading manufacturer of water and energy saving solutions, was designed and developed to eradicate water wastage from urinal flushing systems. Urinals account for 20 per cent of water use in average office-based environments, and many are flushed intermittently regardless of use – which could be wasting thousands of litres of water a day.
The sensor-controlled DFD flushing valve automatically flushes individual urinals only after they have been used or when a hygiene flush is required. Each valve can save approximately 142,080 litres of water a year*, and a controlled trial commissioned by a leading hotel chain demonstrated that water wastage can be reduced by up to 84 per cent. The substantial water efficiency benefits that DFD provides were recognised at the Energy Saving Awards 2023, with the solution winning the Water Saving Commercial Product of the Year category.
The awards acknowledge the important work that has been achieved by manufacturers, installers, contractors, suppliers and organisations to reduce carbon emissions and become more energy efficient. In October this year, DFD also won the Water Efficient Innovation Award category at the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) Sustainability Awards. Richard Braid, Cistermiser’s managing director, said: “We are absolutely thrilled and elated to learn that the DFD has won another water efficiency award. Achieving two prestigious accolades in close succession is testament to the water savings that DFD delivers, without performance being compromised.
The DFD perfectly illustrates the opportunities and scope there is to help businesses significantly reduce their water usage. The DFD is also an incredibly cost-effective solution, with payback typically achieved in just eight months. “Cistermiser designs, develops and manufactures innovative products that minimise water wastage in commercial and public sector washrooms, which in turn also reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
We are wholly committed to supporting organisations to improve their water efficiency, and offer solutions that prevent unnecessary urinal flushing, rectify ‘leaky loos’ and intelligently control the amount of water used by taps and showers.” DFD flushes urinals directly from the mains cold water supply, eliminating the need for a cistern. The valve is completely concealed, being mounted on pipework behind a panel or wall.
A discreet, unobtrusive infrared sensor, which can be powered by either mains electricity or batteries, is installed directly above each urinal bowl – negating the need for users to touch any flush controls, improving hygiene. It is suitable for new or retrofit applications where rear access can be gained to the wall cavity for servicing and inspection.
