Adaptability for Dril-quip wins praise for Spaciotempo

22 January 2010

Dril- quip Europe Ltd, located in Aberdeen, is a major supplier to the thriving local oil and gas industries.

Occupying a large production site in the industrial heartland of North East Scotland it manufactures a range of capital drilling and rig equipment for deepwater environments.

As European headquarters of Dril-quip Inc, the company was looking to extend its facility and grow the business at a time when the general construction industry was booming.

High quotes for a permanent building led the company to put the expansion proposals on hold. However, at the start of the economic downturn Dril-quip re-examined the project in the hope of achieving better value from construction firms.

With prices still considered too high, the company examined the options for a temporary structure to meet its unique requirements for an on-site post production test facility and this is where Spaciotempo came in.

One of the leading providers of temporary buildings, Spaciotempo, offers off-the-shelf and bespoke solutions for companies with temporary structure requirements.

Delighted to win the business, Spaciotempo worked hand in hand with Dril-quip to establish a building design that would work within the constraints of the site. A crucial element of the design was the provision of a 10m door – required for large pieces of assembled kit to move from production to testing. To achieve the irregular aperture the building had to be designed minus a load bearing up-right/leg and without compromising the structural integrity.

Spaciotempo engineers incorporated a 10m portal beam, but with safety paramount, they felt that the sheer weight of a steel roller shutter door would strain the building.

Keen to find the answer, Spaciotempo sourced an instant pass door – much lighter in weight and practically self supporting thanks to the installation of a steel goal post type sub-frame. Combined with 3 single personnel fire doors, thermo roof and gables and single skin steel cladding to the walls, the structure has exceeded all expectations and is proving itself fit for purpose day in day out.

Len Belsher, Manufacturing Manager for Dril-quip, was wholly impressed with Spaciotempo from the point of enquiry to completion of the installation.

“Spaciotempo were excellent and timely in their response to our quote request for a temporary production facility. The team is highly proactive and offered solutions where we thought we may encounter problems. They took me to see their other buildings in Scotland which gave me peace of mind about the quality of the structure. Their installation team presented themselves in a highly proficient manner, operated in a safely on site and were very co-operative and helpful. The build quality is excellent and many other personnel from Dril-quip have commented on the design solution and the robust building supplied by Spaciotempo. We are delighted with the outcome.”
