Book scanning making learning more convenient

25 January 2010

Why book scanning and digitising makes learning and training much more convenient today.

As time goes by we find that more members of the public as well as large organisations require textbooks/picture books and publications scanned into digital format. But what benefits are there when it seems that it is easier to read a book physically than when it is scanned and displayed on a screen?

Many more books are being digitised on a larger scale each year especially by Google who are currently digitising many libraries but people are already aware that it takes patience to read a whole book on screen. Yet there are many advantages to having textbooks, educational material, newspapers, training manuals and many similar texts scanned into electronic format but what exactly are these advantages?

Once the book is scanned and converted it is forever backed up and can be copied to numerous locations to ensure the material is never lost and is also safe from damage and general wear and tear When the book is scanned a process called OCR scanning usually takes places whereby the text from the actual book is captured and converted into searchable text so that once it is converted to PDF any keyword can be located in the book instantly using the search function.

If required the books text can also be converted into an editable Microsoft Word format should anybody want to edit the contents and re-save the file. Many personal scanning jobs are from engineers, IT workers or tradesmen in general find that they tend to carry textbooks/workbooks around to different jobs to refer to any technical issues, they find these bulky to carry around so they required them scanned and digitised, now they no longer require to carry other books around as all of the information is available on their laptops or mobile phones with any technical word just one text search away.

One tutor was recently carrying out some training and education and used books for this. As there were a range of books it was difficult to ensure all students had copies so the books were scanned into e-books which were made available electronically to all his students to refer to which enabled them to study anywhere. There are always legal admissibility issues about distributing electronic versions of scanned publications but if it is used on a small scale for non profit then there shouldn’t be a problem.

So it is understandable when reading a story book that a physical book is best but for everything else a digitised book should always be considered.
