Gas Detection Solutions for the South London Integrated Pathology Services (SLIPS)

13 November 2024

This project was an retrofit of an existing 11,000m² office building, transforming it into one of the largest purpose-built pathology laboratories in the UK.

This state-of-the-art facility will serve as a hub for infection, tissue and blood sciences, alongside specialist services such as COVID testing, toxicology and manual immunology. The facility includes laboratories, specimen triage, meeting rooms and reception areas.

Challenges

Accurate gas level monitoring is required to prevent dangerously depleted or enriched oxygen conditions. In order to ensure the safe handling of a mixture of inert gases, including Helium (He), Nitrogen (N2), and Argon (Ar), we installed Oxygen (O2) depletion detectors across the various laboratories.

Asphyxiation Risk: In environments where inert gases are used, the risk of oxygen displacement increases potentially leading to hazardous situations. If the oxygen level drops below safe thresholds (typically below 19.5%), individuals may experience symptoms of hypoxia, which can include dizziness, confusion and loss of consciousness.

Oxygen enrichment also poses significant risks that must be addressed through strategic placement of enrichment detectors and effective emergency protocols. By proactively managing oxygen levels the associated risks can be significantly reduced.

Solutions Provided

We collaborated closely with various partners to build and deliver a comprehensive gas detection solution.

The systems were installed across several floors in a mixture of laboratories, specialised testing rooms, and reception areas. The main solutions provided were our Pro-Elite gas detection systems, along with additional relay panels and valve isolation systems. The site required a mixture of Oxygen depletion, enrichment and Carbon Dioxide detectors. We installed these at various locations depending on the gas types being used (He, N2, Ar, O2), this along with a comprehensive package of sounders and beacons for alerting within all monitored spaces helps ensure compliance and safety.

Conclusion
The successful retrofit of the SLIPS facility exemplifies our commitment to safety and innovation in gas detection technology. We have created a robust solution that effectively mitigates the risks associated with inert gas usage. Our collaboration with Mace Construction and MultiGas has ensured that the unique challenges of this state-of-the-art laboratory were thoroughly addressed, enabling safe operation across diverse environments.

This project stands as a testament to our dedication to providing reliable and effective gas detection solutions in complex environments.
