BACTERIA CONTROL BOOSTS DEMANDS FOR SPECIALIST RADS

Leading radiator manufacturer, Stelrad, is predicting a boost in sales of anti-bacterial radiators in 2010 following a rise in enquiries for its low surface temperature (LST) range in the wake of swine flu outbreak in the UK.

Stelrad’s LST range is subjected to an intense multi-stage cleaning process using iron phosphate to ensure demineralisation, before several layers of anti-bacterial paint are applied to the product. Cases of swine flu reached an estimated 760,000 in the UK this year, with infection control among the NHS’s primary goals to reduce the spread further. This comes on the back of concerns over the rise of MRSA infections, which has driven bacterial control to the fore in NHS premises and other care environments.

Further research shows that walls and surfaces can also be prone to bacterial infection, particularly if they are not cleaned regularly. Bacteria can grow and divide every 20 minutes, meaning one single cell can become more than 8 million cells in less than 24 hours. It is therefore unsurprising that increased consideration is being given to the selection of any items on whose surfaces bacteria can harbour. While enquires for anti-bac radiators have been anecdotal at this stage, Stelrad believes a trend is emerging in which they will become popular for critical environments, which may even see this being listed as a requirement in the tender process.
John Bradley, sales and marketing director at Stelrad explains;

“With swine flu still on the rise and infection control high on everyone’s agenda, it is unsurprising that contractors for clinical environments are being more meticulous than ever before in their specification choices. Because of this, we are seeing contractors and specifiers demand more and more from the products that they select. Although price, efficiency and reliability will always be key considerations, specifiers for clinical and safety critical environments are under even more pressure to ensure their choices not only meet, but exceed strict health guidelines. This trend has also extended into other public environments, as infection control becomes an increasingly talked about topic. It is therefore not only schools and nursing homes which are turning to LSTs, but also offices, workplaces and retail environments. As a result, we fully expect that sales of these specialist products will continue to increase during 2010.”

Stelrad’s LST collection comprises 144 variations of the LST and LST Plus. Each radiator in the range features an attractive, flat panel outer casing which is totally reversible to allow piping flexibility. The LST Standard also offers pipe “knock outs” on the side panels to facilitate surface mounted pipework. Safety grilles are supplied as standard and can be assembled to run full width or to cover pipes on one side only. Simple and quick to install, the front fascia panel is held by security fittings to prevent unauthorised access to the emitter which is accommodated inside with a unique seam fixing bracket system. The front fascia can also be completely detached to allow safe cleaning and maintenance procedures. The LST Plus also offers an integral remote sensing thermostatic radiator valve and lockshield.
