Gradus Plays Safe at Legoland® Discovery Centre
11 October 2010
Contract interiors specialist Gradus has supplied stair edgings and barrier matting for the UK’s first LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre as part of a £7.5 million building project.
Located in The Trafford Centre, Manchester, the LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre is a unique indoor attraction offering a fun, highly interactive and educational experience for children aged three to twelve. The Centre is made up of a series of interactive features including MINILAND, an interactive laser ride and a 4D cinema.Gradus’ PVC-u hardnose stair edgings in Black were installed throughout the Centre’s stairwell, which is used by visitors and staff alike. The stair edgings help to minimise the risk of slips and trips on stairs by providing a solid band of colour to define the step edge.
The stair edgings provide visual contrast with the wooden staircase to ensure 30 points difference in Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is achieved, in line with guidelines in BS8300:2009 and Approved Document M of The Buildings Regulations 2000.
In addition, Gradus’ Topguard primary barrier matting with Black wipers was installed at the main entrance to the Centre, which experiences high traffic volumes on a daily basis. The matting helps to improve safety by reducing the risk of slip accidents caused by moisture and coarse dirt being tracked in to the Centre on footwear and wheeled traffic such as pushchairs and wheelchairs.
This also helps to reduce cleaning and maintenance costs whilst maintaining the appearance and protecting adjacent floorcoverings.
Rachael Lockitt, Marketing Manager at the LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre, commented: “The first few months after the opening of the UK’s first ever LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre have been a very exciting time. Visitor figures are exceeding forecasts, and our LEGO shop where visitors can purchase a great range of products is also trading extremely well.
“When it came to the specification process, we felt it was vital to work with a company with a proven quality and service record to give us real peace of mind. We’re pleased to say that the barrier matting and stair edgings from Gradus are serving their purpose exceptionally well.”
Caroline Davies, Accessories Product Manager for Gradus, adds: “The high amount of visitors to the LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre illustrates just how important it is to specify fit-for-purpose products.
“Our range of PVC-u hardnose stair edgings are ideal for use in heavy traffic environments. Similarly, our Topguard primary barrier matting is suitable for the most demanding of applications and can even be reversed to extend the product life.”
Gradus Hardnose is an extensive range of attractive and hardwearing stair edgings comprising PVC-u channels and slip resistant inserts that can be used to complement any design scheme.
Gradus Topguard is manufactured from rubber wipers interwoven with nylon fibres and linking strips in a choice of aluminium, PVC-u or brass, held together with galvanized steel wires.
