Gradus accessories gives Macclesfield Learning Zone the edge

Gradus Accessories has supplied stair edgings from its innovative XT range for installation at Macclesfield College, High School and Sixth Form College, which form part of an exciting new £38million educational campus at Macclesfield Learning Zone.
The state of the art Learning Zone also incorporates a new home for the College’s European Centre for Aerospace Training (ECAT) and a joint sports centre.
The XT stair edgings were fitted onto 11 staircases as a superior safety measure to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls, in line with the guidance in Part M of the Building Regulations 2000. Jet (black) inserts were selected to provide high colour contrast with the blue linoleum floorcovering to help in the provision of an inclusive environment, as set out in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
The XT range features slip-resistant inserts that extend around the leading edge of the step and maximise safety underfoot. The inserts are held securely in place by a specialist adhesive bond, with a locking mechanism for additional strength. The advanced features of the XT stair edgings are backed by research from BRE, which concluded that by increasing friction at the leading edge of the step, safety on non-domestic stairs could be improved.
The availability of such benefits prompted the College to upgrade its original specification for traditional aluminium stair edging to the new XT range.
Says Ken Reece, Marketing and External Relations Manager for Macclesfield College: “The wellbeing of college students and staff is paramount, which is why we opted to upgrade our specification to the XT range, as it satisfies the very latest legislative and safety guidelines. Plus, the edgings’ strength and durability will help to minimise long-term repair and maintenance costs.”

The XT range incorporates 55mm treads and both 40mm and 55mm risers to meet the guidance in Part M, and specifiers can choose from 11 different coloured inserts to provide colour contrast with surrounding floorcoverings.
