Reid gives Water Aid a lift

REID Lifting Managing Director, Nick Battersby, is taking on one of the worlds toughest running challenges to raise funds for Water Aid, an international non governmental organisation who’s mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water in the world's poorest communities.
Nick, a keen marathon runner and member of Chepstow Harriers, has run in many locations around the world, but nothing as extreme as the Marathon des Sables, a gruelling 151 mile run across the Sahara Dessert in temperatures of up to 120°F, over 6 days carrying your own kit & food.Nick said;
“MdS has always been a challenge that I’d like to try ‘one day’. Somehow I got talked into entering and felt if I’m to make the effort I should run to raise money for Water Aid, a very important global charity with real relevance particularly in the African continent. Apart from being a life changing charity their activity has a marvellous legacy that has value for many years to come. As a key supplier to the international Water Industry we are very aware of the challenges facing many people around the world and this is a small opportunity to help raise funds.”

The Marathon des Sables - the toughest footrace on earth.
It covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km), run over 6 – 7 days; equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons. That's a speed of between 3 and 14 km an hour. In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.
Competitors will have to prepare all their own food throughout the race without any chance of finding a supermarket or corner shop.
They will experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, running or walking on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15 - 20% of the distance being in sand dunes.
The heat, distance and rubbing will trash feet and may cause severe trauma if incorrect equipment is used.
The 4th day, will set off across the barren wilderness to complete a 45 - 50 mile stage. Few people complete this before dark that evening and some will not come in till after dark the next night. This is followed by the 42km Marathon stage.
The majority of competitors raise money through sponsorship. Potential sponsors will appreciate, admire and respect the determination in entering the 'toughest footrace on Earth', especially when doing it for such a good cause as WaterAid.

Here are some examples of what Water Aid can do with your donation/sponsorship:
- £5 could pay for a bag of cement to build a latrine slab in Ghana.
- £100 could pay a mason to build a hand-dug well in Nigeria.
- £15 is enough to give one person a lasting supply of safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.
- £150 could pay to train two community members to maintain their village water supplies in Ethiopia.
- £25 could pay for a mason to protect a spring in Uganda.
- £200 could buy a locally built rope pump in Mozambique.
- £50 is enough for two days of hygiene education training in a village in Tanzania.
- £385 could pay for a school sanitation block for 150 boys and girls in India.
