New noise products to keep the hospitality industry compliant

Cirrus Research plc has unveiled a new range to help the hospitality businesses meet new legal limits on noise.
Cirrus Research plc, the UK company specialising in noise measurement equipment, has unveiled a new range to help the hospitality businesses meet new legal limits on noise.
Sophisticated yet easy to use, the state-of-the-art equipment will help owners ensure bars, hotels and restaurants comply with new regulations on noise, coming into force in April 2008. With a survey conducted by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf showing 68 per cent of employers are unaware of the new regulations, the range of sound monitors from Cirrus Research will allow managers to measure occupational noise levels inside their premises and environmental noise levels outside their establishments.
James Tingay, of Cirrus Research explains: “Strict Control of Noise at Work Regulations, which have applied to all other workplaces since 2005, are due to be extended to the hospitality industry in April 2008. These impose a statutory duty on employers to identify noise hazards, estimate likely exposure to noise, identify measures required to eliminate and reduce risk, control noise exposure, protect employees and keep records. As a result, unless noise levels in your operation remain exactly the same, at every time of day or night throughout the year, it is unlikely that an annual check by external noise consultants will suffice.”
Under the new regulations, an Upper Exposure Action value of 85 decibels will be introduced, allowing for eight hours’ exposure. However, exposure time is slashed for every three decibel increase.
Cirrus Research’s new range has been designed and developed for all businesses within the hospitality sector, from larger hotels and restaurants to small pubs, clubs and bars.
The equipment ranges from sound level meters, designed to enable businesses to be self-sufficient in noise measurement, to “doseBadge” personal noise dose meters, worn by individual members of staff to measure the noise they are exposed to during a typical working day. Mr Tingay continues: “With prices starting at £245, our equipment can help to ensure that all businesses remain within the letter of the law, preventing stiff penalties under health and safety legislation, future compensation claims from staff or problems with neighbours.”
The Cirrus Research design team will offer advice to businesses on which sound level monitor and kit they will need to satisfy legal requirements, based on what they want to record, from noise within their premises or noise levels experienced by neighbours, and how much data they need to store. They can demonstrate how the sophisticated sound level monitors can ensure compliance with the new law.
All Cirrus Research equipment is supplied with a new ‘2-12’ year warranty. This provides an initial 24-month warranty which can be extended up to 12 years if the equipment is serviced and recalibrated by Cirrus every 12 months. Free backup and support, including license free software and updates, is provided with every Cirrus noise measurement product. Cirrus Research plc has over 30 years experience of the design and manufacture of noise measurement instruments. During that time, the company has developed a reputation for producing robust, practical equipment which can perform in real situations.
All Cirrus equipment is made in the UK and the company is responsible for all after sales service and calibration work. Spare parts and support are therefore always available.
In 1991 Cirrus Research plc was awarded the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement, with noise measurement equipment exported to over 50 countries worldwide.
