New ‘one for all’ handset offers extra security for hospital and at-risk staff

26 May 2011

Call Systems Technology (CST) has launched what it believes is the ultimate all-in-one communications device – a single handset that does it all. By linking text and voice messaging into one unit, which has a variety of personnel alarm functions and can also handle automatic alerts from the site’s alarm systems, the C-3115 DECT handset enables faster, more accurate operation and greater security for personnel.

Attacks on NHS staff are a huge problem. Even more so in high risk environments such as psychiatric units, custodial and other secure sites. Whatever the location, staff safety is paramount and clear, fast communications can be the difference between life and death.

However, in many cases personnel are forced to carry two, three or even more communications devices to cover different forms of messaging and various alarm functions. It’s a situation that can compromise security.
Now Call Systems Technology (CST) has launched what it believes is the ultimate all-in-one communications device – a single handset that does it all. By linking text and voice messaging into one unit, which has a variety of personnel alarm functions and can also handle automatic alerts from the site’s alarm systems, the C-3115 DECT handset enables faster, more accurate operation and greater security for personnel.

For lone workers and at-risk staff, the C-3115’s multi-alarm capabilities deliver extended security. A large, easily accessible alarm button on top of the unit means the user can summon help instantly. On the handset’s side is an extra function key for ‘soft’ pre-set alarms.
In critical situations where the user can’t set off an alarm, the handset’s automatic systems take over. It can be programmed to send instant alarms if the user falls, remains stationary for an unusual amount of time, starts running or when the device tilts. It can also send an alarm if the handset is snatched from the user.

CST can supply the handset with a precise location and positioning system. This allows support staff to instantly obtain an accurate location of the person in need of help. The positioning system can also be programmed so that the handset can be used for access control, allowing staff carrying it to open security doors and enter restricted areas.

The access restrictions can be turned off and on remotely, from central control. The C-3115 can be integrated with complex alarm systems covering, for example, fire, building, machine operation and access control. If any system’s alarm is tripped, the C-3115 receives an instant alert by text. The C-3115’s large screen colour codes messages and alarms and the system automatically prioritises them, with the most urgent at the top.

It thus gives an instant picture of the site, enabling staff to take appropriate action. The new handset is designed to withstand rough use and abuse. The robust design features a rubberised casing, for the best possible grip, and the handset is drop-tested and water and dust resistant, in compliance with IP65 classification.
