Intelligent flooring cleans up at Pinderfields Hospital

Works have recently completed on the £311 million project for the new build Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, where Tarkett flooring has been installed to provide a high performance, decorative solution that also offers outstanding life cycle and sustainability properties.

The new hospital has been designed with patients and staff at its heart, providing greater comfort, privacy and dignity alongside the latest equipment and technology. The new facility includes 708 beds, 50% of which are single en-suite rooms, along with 46 departments and a stand-alone pathology building.

“Balfour Beatty is committed to conducting all aspects of its operations in an environmentally responsible manner from design, through to construction, maintenance, operation and refurbishment”, commented Rob Preston, Senior Project Manager. “Tarkett supported the project's sustainability targets by taking back over 40 tonnes of off-cuts for recycling into new vinyl flooring”.

Over 70,000m2 of Tarkett products were installed throughout Pinderfields, including Granit Multisafe and Eminent Safe T safety flooring for wet areas, and iQ Granit for general wards and all circulation zones. The iQ range is part of Tarkett’s choice of sustainable solutions. iQ products are based on up to 59% natural raw materials, such as salt and mineral fillers and Tarkett uses local suppliers wherever possible to reduce the environmental impact of transportation. They also contain 25% post-production and 0.5% post-installation recycled materials.

Tarkett’s iQ range delivers valuable health, hygiene and welfare benefits needing no wax or polish forever thanks to the unique Surface Restoration properties. This reduces the strain on cleaning staff and minimises the need for water, detergent and energy for cleaning and maintenance, offering cost savings of up to 30%. Very low VOC emissions contribute to good indoor air quality (less than 100 μg/m3 at 28 days), which is particularly important for healthcare facilities.

As one of the first flooring companies to recycle post-production waste, Tarkett now operates a system for collecting post-installation waste, known as ReUse. Given the requirement to reduce waste on large-scale construction projects, the facility to collect and recycle off-cuts and waste materials from site is an important consideration when selecting a supplier.
