Metrotile refurbishing BISF housing stock
09 April 2008
Leading steel roofing manufacturer, Metrotile, is undertaking a wide range of projects across the UK to refurbish the now ageing BISF housing stock, built during the middle of the last century.
BISF houses were built following an association of the UK’s major steel producers, who combined to form the British Iron and Steel Federation in 1934. Their task was to provide central planning for the industry, a consequence of which was the development of a permanent, steel framed housing design, developed by architect Sir Frederick Gibberd and approved for construction in 1944.
Over 36,000 BISF houses were then built, many of which are now in the process of, or planned to be, refurbished. Metrotile is currently undertaking major refurbishment programmes with a number of local authorities, including Bristol, Oxford, Swindon, Neath and Port Talbot, and Swansea, with several hundred properties currently being refurbished across the UK.
The lightweight nature of the steel roof has been a major consideration in the product specification - with a weight typically one seventh that of concrete or slate tiles. As a result, the structural load placed on the ageing housing stock is considerably less than the roof material being placed, whilst the speed with which the material can be installed is significantly quicker given its low weight, large format characteristics.
Crucially though, neither aesthetics nor performance have been compromised in the selection of steel roofing. Metro Bond has been specified at each of the sites, in colours to suit the replaced materials – and so the planning requirements - and to ensure continuity of design over the period of the refurbishment programme.
In line with the full Metrotile product range, Metro Bond is manufactured from high grade steel and protected by an Aluzinc coating – combining the protection of zinc with the durability of aluminium and allowing a full 40 year guarantee to be given on the product’s performance.
