Power Through Control
12 April 2013
Critical buildings and facilities are challenged with constantly evolving demands on their energy performance.
Flexibility is vital – and a one size fits all solution is too rigid to meet the ever changing remit of a hard working electrical infrastructure. The optimisation of critical power availability and protection of vital assets requires a careful balancing act between the changing power demands in a building with the provision of greener, cleaner power. Furthermore, rising energy costs and premiums on floor space mean that power density is at the forefront of every organisation’s concerns.
The critical power specialist, Socomec, has developed a broad range of integrated products and services to address four of the most important and topical power issues: availability, eficiency, capacity and flexibility.
With over 90 years’ experience in the development and manufacture of innovative power systems, Socomec combines a rich heritage in low voltage electrical power with market leading technology to offer the most advanced solutions available today.
Bespoke packages of Socomec products and support services can deliver the ultimate performance for the most demanding applications – throughout the entire equipment lifecycle.
The breadth and depth of expertise within Socomec’s core business applications – Critical Power, Energy Efficiency, Power Control & Safety, Solar – position the organisation as an industry authority.
Andrew Wilkinson, Managing Director of Socomec UK comments: “At Socomec we are increasingly looking at how we can integrate technology from each of our four business applications in order to provide systems that improve the performance of Data Centres and critical facilities. The supply of reliable, cost-effective power which can be scaled to meet rapidly changing capacity demands is the foundation upon which our clients’ businesses are built.
Socomec invests heavily in pioneering research and product design in order to deliver world-class innovations that solve our customers’ greatest challenges in terms of energy efficiency, reliability, business continuity and Total Cost of Ownership. We are excited to be able to offer fully integrated solutions, drawing on the wealth of knowledge and skills from each highly specialised division of Socomec.”
Examples of where Socomec brings benefits innovation to its customers are its Green Power 2.0 range of UPS technology, its Atys range of transfer switches and its DIRIS and COUNTIS meters.
At the cutting edge of static UPS technology, the Green Power 2.0 range was successfully launched during 2012. The range complies with the most stringent environmental protection standards without compromising on performance – even in the most challenging applications.
With units available from 10 kW to 500 kW, the Socomec Green Power (GP) 2.0 UPS range has been developed to allow organisations to protect their mission critical infrastructures and ensure that their UPS equipment is fully compatible with the latest developments in server architecture.
GP 2.0 provides users with full-rated power (kW = kVA) supporting full loads up to 35 °C in accordance with IEC 62040-3 - with 25% more power compared to UPS with PF = 0.8 and 11% more power compared to UPS with PF = 0.9.
The range has been designed to give a rapid return on investment, guaranteed 24/7 uptime and is supported - throughout its lifecycle - by a dedicated engineering team.
The unity power factor enables the GP 2.0 to deliver more power from the same sized cabinet. Providing the highest power densities available in the industry - up to 358 kW/m2 - the GP2.0 is as efficient on space as it is on energy.
Furthermore, Socomec’s GP2.0 already fulfils current and future European Code of Conduct for Data Centre regulations to 2014.
The Green Power (GP) 2.0 500kW is the very latest development in this range of future-proof, energy efficient critical power solutions.
At 500kVA/kw the latest GP2.0 is a transformer-less new unit, combining unbeatable energy efficiency with unity power to provide the ultimate future-proof critical power solution.
Socomec’s ATyS range - designed specifically for low voltage automatic transfer applications.
The ATyS M is designed to control switching between two single phase or three phase sources of supply in remote automatic or manual modes for emergency operations. This Transfer Switching Equipment (TSE) is designed for use with low voltage power systems with interrupted supply of the load during transfer.
The ATyS M 3s (RTSE) is the remote controlled version of the product. This is operated through an externally automated, voltage free contact in the three positions (0, I and II), following a pulse logic or maintained contactor.
The ATyS M 6 (ATSE) is the automatic version which controls supply and automatic transfers based on the configurable parameters.
The new DIRIS and COUNTIS ranges will measure, analyse and monitor network data at every level within the power infrastructure. COUNTIS E meters electric power consumption by loads, thereby enabling control and allocation of usage. It is MID certified and communicates via RS485.
Besides metering functions, the new DIRIS A multi-function measuring stations monitor and optimise networks by alarm management, monitoring distribution parameters and the remote control of electrical devices. They communicate via Ethernet and have temperature modules.
Also covering the metering and counting functions, the DIRIS N analyses the quality of the energy supplied in compliance with the criteria defined by standard EN 50160 and provides a detailed analysis of ‘pollution’ (for example, harmonic, inter-harmonic, transient, flicker effect...).
Completing the range, the DIRIS BCMS enables current, energy and power monitoring in Power Distribution Units or Remote Power Panels on up to 72 branch circuits.
