David Lloyd keeping fit with Proludic kit

24 February 2009

David Lloyd in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire wanted to provide an outdoor play facility that reflected their active environment and was both innovative and exciting. The area had to compliment existing services and offer children a place to play outdoors

One of the key criteria of the brief was that the play area had to have a dual function beyond that of a simple play area. Therefore individual play elements that could be used for circuits in their children’s ‘High 5 Club’ and ‘Junior Fit Camps’ needed to be incorporated. The area for the play site was quite small, so the equipment used had to fit these constraints yet still provide open space between items.

Proludic who are also based in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, were chosen to undertake the job of designing and installing the facility. Being a local company and regular users of the club, Proludic were able to understand first hand their needs and were also readily available for any site meetings.

David Lloyd Operations Support Manager, Mike Garforth said "Proludic did really well in custom designing the facility for the area we had available. David Lloyd are proud to use Proludic as our contractors to build our new children’s play area”.

“In keeping with the David Lloyd ethos, we knew that the design of the play area had to excite and challenge children of all ages and abilities whilst entertaining the active and energetic dimensions of play” said Proludic Designer Fiona Cleland.

For smaller children, a balancing trail and trampoline were included – these are great pieces of kit that can be used to create assault courses for the ‘High 5Club’. A sand pit with covering was also put in for this age group. Sand play is good for learning and development as it enables children to explore different textures and properties.
One of the central features of the area is a mound with a crouch tunnel underneath it. Children can use this area to create their own play activities and it encourages imaginative play.

For older children, a sky rail, Biibox multiplay and Rodeo Board were included.
The Rodeo Board is part of the Proludic Dynamic range which aims to replicate the extreme sport of windsurfing. It is perfect for the David Lloyd environment as it comes complete with signage, alerting people to the muscle groups and energy expenditure they use when participating in it. All of the equipment was installed onto Safety Mat surfacing, which gives a natural feel to the surroundings.

The play area was launched in October 2008 with an official opening from Nottingham Rugby Club and Archie the team mascot. Also in attendance was Robin, the Nottingham Forest Football Club Mascot. The play area was packed out for the open day with all children claiming they ‘love the equipment and want to come to the club more often to play on it". Mike Garforth said, “Nearly four months on and the children who used the equipment on the day of the launch still go out to enjoy the facilities”.
