Proludic playful landscapes

21 April 2009

Inspiring play spaces entice children outdoors to play.

Creating playful landscapes is currently high on the agenda with government open space planners and playground manufacturers keen to provide children with a place to play that both fits into the locality and brings children closer to nature. In the, ‘Design for Play’ guide, commissioned by Play England, 10 key design principles are described in order to craft successful areas. The playground manufacturer, Proludic Ltd use these principles in as many of their projects as possible.

Prior to the publication of the guide, Proludic created a play space for Spelthorne Borough Council in Halliford Park which utilised the design principles on ensuring play spaces are "designed to enhance its setting" and "well located". Halliford Park is set in a wooded and natural area, surrounded by trees and wildlife. The design and equipment compliment these key elements.

The focal point of the park is the Proludic Kanope multiplay unit. The item is ideal for the space, as it takes its inspiration from nature. The units' shelters symbolise tree houses and the soft green and honey colours enhance this theme further. The park is heavily themed with the use of trains, frogs and parakeets. These help capture childrens' imagination and also explain the history of the area.

The park has been opened since May 2008 and has had a positive impact. Derek James, Spelthorne Borough Council Parks Manager, comments, “The kids love it, however it offers something for all age groups”. The play park sits perfectly within its' surrounds. The design being directly led by the landscape around it, whilst also providing fantastic play value for the children.
