EPDM seal simplifies frame installation
14 September 2009
The sealing film from Tremco illbruck provides solutions for the practical problems associated with weather sealing door and window frames as well as curtain walling installations.
Instead of operatives attempting to slice pieces of the highly elastic material from a ‘log’ on site, accurate and highly effective perimeter seals can be formed using lengths of the new External EPDM Film seal. The rolls of elastomeric sheet are supplied laminated either with or without butyl and self-adhesive strips which enable them to be fixed across the joint between frame and surrounding substrate. The installer friendly system is seen as ideal for challenging locations such as installations on high rise buildings where wind speeds are normally higher, while it will provide supplementary help in meeting the increasingly onerous requirements of Part L to the Building Regulations in terms of airtightness.
Derek Read, National Sales manager for Tremco illbruck, commented; “illbruck External EPDM Film can be used as a secondary weather seal behind the silicone or impregnated foam, while it can also be employed as a primary weather seal on commercial buildings. It is a very simple method of achieving a dependable seal compared to the often messy and wasteful process of applying primers, adhesives and sections of hand cut EPDM”.
Although normal stipulations regarding achieving a secure bond apply, it is possible to treat damp or dusty surfaces with illbruck Butyl and Bitumen as a primer. The self adhesive side to the film is then applied to the PVC, aluminium or other smooth profile while the butyl section is rollered onto masonry, render or similar elevations. Lap joints can be treated using Tremco JS 770 sealant. A mechanical pressure plate can also be used to clamp the seal. If desired, however, the butyl bond is normally considered strong enough for inclusion on its own.
Tremco illbruck External EPDM Film can be supplied in thicknesses of 0.75 and 1.2 mm and roll widths are produced in 50 mm increments from 100 mm up to 400 mm. The product can be applied in ambient temperatures of between +5°C and +35°C while its performance meets the requirements of all relevant design codes.
