A Quick and Easy Guide to Using Twitter for Your Business
11 April 2023
Twitter has undoubtedly been the most talked about social media platform over the last year with business magnate Elon Musk acquiring it and implementing changes, including some controversial ones.
Whatever your views on its owner, Twitter is one of social media’s giants. It is currently used by over 325 million users every month and is free to use. You don’t have to be Elon Musk to know that is a lot of potential eyes on your business, customers and free advertising.
But, how to start marketing your business on Twitter? If this question seems daunting or overwhelming don’t worry. This short guide will make it easy and give you all the tips you need to make your Twitter strategy a success from setting up your account to what to post.
Setting Up a Twitter Account for Your Business
- Make sure your handle includes your business name, this is the name you will use and be known by on the platform so you want people to know who you are.
- Take time to complete your profile. Use your brand colours and use the 160 characters available in your bio to good effect.
- Ensure you add a picture this could be your business logo or a picture of yourself if it’s your business or your CEO if it’s not.
- Use the space underneath your picture and bio for your business website.
- Don’t neglect the birthday feature; this is a good way to demonstrate how many years of experience you have as well as to help your potential customers get to know you. Remember a key strategy on social media is to get your potential customers to know, like and trust you.
This decision should be made according to your more general marketing campaign and brand strategy and will involve identifying your customers; their demographics as well as their needs and problems.
It will also involve studying your competitors, seeing what they are posting and what is generating the most interaction i.e. comments and retweets.
Top Tips for Posting on Twitter
- Keep it simple – only one topic per Tweet, use relatable language – not business jargon.
- Include pictures, videos and gifs. Statistics show that text-only Tweets get less engagement.
- Utilise hashtags, but don’t go overboard. 1 or 2 per Tweet is the ‘Goldilocks Zone’ (just the right amount).
- Adding a link to a relevant piece of content such as a news article or a resource that is helpful to your ideal customers are the most popular type of Tweet.
- Ask questions relevant to your business. People love to share their opinions – make use of that.
- Consider timing – people are generally most active on Twitter between 7 am and 10 am and then between 6 pm and 9 pm. So this is when you are likely to see your best results.
- Track your metrics. What were your most popular Tweets in terms of both engagement and impressions?
- Increase your followers. It’s simple the more followers you have the more potential customers are seeing your content and getting to know your business. You can do this by creating engaging, shareable content.
- Interact and build relationships with others and re-tweet their content, they will be more inclined to re-tweet yours if you do.
