5 Things to Consider When Choosing your Washroom Material
12 April 2023
Make sure your washroom is both functional and visually appealing by considering these five factors when selecting materials
As a washroom manufacturer, we understand that choosing the right materials for your washroom project is essential. To help guide you we have broken down 5 key areas that we think you should consider to make an informed decision.
Traffic
When selecting materials for your washroom it is important to consider the level of traffic that it will receive. Areas that are expected to receive high traffic will require robust materials to withstand heavy use without showing signs of wear and tear, such as scratches.
Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) is the best material to opt for in high use washroom areas, such as service stations and school toilets. SGL is a dense material with a solid core making it highly robust and will ensure longevity of the washroom products.
Washroom Regulations
Some sectors have specific washroom regulations that must be considered or adhered to regarding materials. It is important to do your research on the sector you are working in to ensure you comply with standards.
The Department for Education School Toilet Regulations ask that the “toilet cubicle systems shall be constructed from waterproof solid laminate” (Technical Annex 2A: Sanitaryware – 3.2.16). Manufacturing the school toilet products in Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) makes sure that the washroom withstands the demands of daily school use by lots of students and survive any potential vandalism.
Department of Health state that “all finishes in healthcare facilities should be chose with cleaning in mind… that is, smooth, non-porous and water-resistant” (HBN 00-10 Part C: Sanitaryware Assemblies – 1.18). Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) would be the best choice to will pass healthcare regulations as it is totally imperious to water. However, High Pressure Laminate (HPL) is also suitable as it is water resistant, we would recommend this in areas where it is not always subject to water ingress.
Environment
The environment of your washroom is also a critical factor to consider when selecting your materials. If your washroom is exposed to high humidity or dampness, such as swimming pool changing rooms and shower areas in campsites, then moisture resistant materials such as Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) or solid surface may be more suitable.
Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) must only be specified if the washroom area is going to be dry at all times, any water ingress can cause damage to this material. If cleaning is required regularly but it is not going to be frequently wet then High Pressure Laminate (HPL) is ideal as has a moisture resistant laminate face which can withstand a small amount of moisture.
Budget
If the environment or washroom regulations do not dictate the material that must be chosen then budget can be considered to make your material choice. In some instances where traffic is low and conditions are dry then Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) is a great budget-friendly washroom material to opt for.
However, if looking for longevity then high quality and durable materials may have a higher upfront cost, but they are likely to last longer and require less maintenance over time. Be sure to consider the full cost of materials, installation and maintenance to make the most cost-effective decision for your washrooms.
Aesthetic
Finally, the aesthetic appeal of your washroom can make a significant impact on the perception of your washroom to its users. When choosing materials, consider your design scheme, colour palette, and the overall look and feel of the space. A materials such as veneer and ColourCoat that can be manufactured to a flush fronted design paired with stainless steel fittings can create a luxury washroom design.
In conclusion, traffic, washroom regulations, environment, aesthetic and budget should be taken into consideration collectively to create an informed decision. From this you can choose materials that meet your requirements and provide, safe, functional and visually appealing washrooms for your users.
