Weidmüller extends Cable Glands range
12 September 2010
The new Klippon® range from Weidmüller, predestined for use in hazardous areas – Ex e, Ex d rated cable glands are designed for armoured and non-armoured cables.
The new Klippon® family of cable glands for armoured and non-armoured cables is predestined for use in Ex e (increased safety) and Ex d (flameproof) applications. Weidmüller also provides the appropriate Klippon® blanking plugs KSPM/KSPA as well as other accessories such as lock-nuts, flat seals, serrated washers, shrouds and earth tags.Bearing the Weidmüller logo as a sign of their high quality all Klippon® cable glands KDSU, KDSW, KDSX, KSG and KUB are approved in line with the latest standards, such as ATEX (EN 60079-0/1/7 and EN 61241-0/1) as well as IECEx (IEC 60079-0/1/7). Depending on the type utilised cable glands facilitate the connection of braided, shielded armoured, additional armouring with lead sheathing as well as single-core and metal-foil armoured conductors and cables ranging in size from M20 through to M75.
They are suitable for use across a wide temperature range of mostly -60 °C to +180 °C. Put succinctly, cable glands protect electrical equipment against exposure to mechanical influences - such as moisture and dust - by providing a secure and tightly sealed connection with an enclosure. In addition, they protect personel against possible dangers whilst using the equipment. Consequently, it is essential when selecting cable glands to maintain the IP rating of the enclosure or device to be connected, otherwise it is not possible to rule out faults occurring in the system with the potential to cause injury. The Klippon® family offers a comprehensive range from which to choose.
The Klippon® cable glands range consists of KDSU, KDSW, KDSX, KSG and KUB:
Klippon® KDSU cable glands:
KDSU cable glands have a conical ring to allow the connection of single core as well as metal-foil armoured conductors and cables with braided screening. It is equally possible to connect non-armoured conductors and cables. Two separate seals seal the outer and inner cable sheath/insulation. The cable armouring is between the inner and outer sheath/insulation. The temperature range for cable glands in combination with neoprene seals is -20 °C to +85 °C. To achieve an extended temperature range of -60 °C to +180 °C the user selects a silicone seal. Both sealing materials correspond to IP68 protection class rating for a water depth of 25 meters (30 minutes at 2.5 bar). KDSU cable glands are approved for use in 'Ex d' flameproof and 'Ex e' increased safety applications.
Klippon® KDSW cable glands:
KDSW cable glands have a special conically shaped ring that facilitates connecting single-core armoured cables and lead sheathed conductors and cables. In addition, KDSW cable glands also have two seals to seal the outer and inner cable insulation. When selecting a neoprene seal the user achieves a temperature range of -20 °C to +85 °C; the alternative silicone seal offers an extended temperature range of -60 °C to +180 °C. Both seals are designed to offer IP66 and IP68 protection ratings for a water depth of 25 meters (30 minutes at 2.5 bar). KDSW cable glands are approved for use in 'Ex d' flameproof and 'Ex e' increased safety applications.
Klippon® KDSX cable glands:
KDSX cable glands are supplied ex works with a conically shaped ring that allows connection of conductors and cables with braided armouring. KDSX cable glands also have two seals for the outer and inner cable insulation. The cable is armoured between the inner and outer insulation. KDSX cable glands with silicone seals are available for immediate delivery for applications requiring temperature range ratings between -60 °C and +180 °C. The sealing material is designed to achieve IP66 and IP68 protection ratings for a water depth of 25 meters (30 minutes at 2.5 bar). KDSX cable glands are approved for use in 'Ex d' flameproof and 'Ex e' increased safety applications.
Klippon® KSG cable glands:
KSG are designed to facilitate the connection of non-armoured conductors and cables. With a neoprene seal KSG cable glands are suitable for use in applications operating in temperatures ranging between -20 °C and +85 °C; with silicone seals they can be utilised in temperatures ranging from -60 °C to +180 °C. The sealing materials offer IP protection ratings IP66 and IP68 for a water depth of 25 meters (30 minutes at 2.5 bar). KSG cable glands are approved for use in 'Ex d' flameproof and 'Ex e' increased safety applications.
Klippon® KUB compound-filled cable glands:
KUB cable glands are supplied with a conically shaped ring to facilitate the connection of single-core and metal-foil armoured conductors and cables with braided armouring. They are also suitable for connecting non-armoured conductors and cables. KUB compound-filled cable glands are provided with a seal to seal the outer cable sheath. After stripping the inner sheath the user packs a compound, which is contained in the range of supply, in and around the remaining area of the connection cable to optimally fill and seal all gaps between the exposed cores. KUB cable glands are certified for temperatures ranging between -60 °C and +85 °C. Filled with compound KUB cable glands are rated to protection class IP68 for a water depth of 100 meters (30 minutes at 10 bar). KUB compound-filled cable glands are approved exclusively for use in flameproof Ex d applications. A selection wizard designed by Weidmüller shows applications for which KUB cable glands are suitable as well as those where it is advisable to use a cable gland with a sealing washer.
Klippon® KSPM and KSPA blanking plugs;
The KSPM blanking plug is designed with a mushroom shape and an integral hex socket. It is used to protect unused threaded holes until they are required to fit cable glands at a later date. Available in brass or stainless-steel the KSPM blanking plug is designed for use in temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +80 °C and is rated to protection class IP66 or IP68. The KSPM blanking plug is approved for use in 'Ex d' flameproof and 'Ex e' increased safety applications.
The KSPA blanking plug (plain brass) features an integral hex socket. It also protects unused threaded holes until they are required to fit cable glands at a later date. Rated to IP54 it is designed for a temperature range of between -50 °C and +180 °C. The KSPA is approved for flameproof Ex d applications. Extensive range of accessories: To complement its Klippon® family Weidmüller offers an extensive range of accessories including SKMU lock nuts - nickel-plated brass (M16 to M75) or plain brass (M16 to M90). SKMU serrated lock nuts, nickel-plated brass - EMC (M16 to M63) are also available.
In addition, there are flat seals (optionally made of polyethylene, neoprene, fibre-glass or nylon) and SZS serrated lock washers made of stainless-steel as well as Klippon®KPS shrouds and, last but not least, earth tags.
