Plant hire company optimises delivery service with bespoke trailer from Andover
10 March 2011
East-Anglian plant hire company GB Digger Hire has taken delivery of a bespoke tri-axle step-frame beavertail trailer from manufacturer Andover Trailers, which it says will optimise its delivery service.
The new SFCL 48 trailer, which measures 13.6 m by 2.53 m, features Andover Trailers’ new upper-deck double-profile design, and will be one in a fleet of two trailers and three tractor units transporting a variety of plant from GB Digger Hire’s base in Norwich to customers all over the UK.Designed specifically to carry equipment such as telescopic handlers, excavators, scissor lifts, dumpers, asphalt rollers and forklift trucks, the trailer comes fitted with SAF air suspension with raise/lower control, lifting rear axle and an Electronic Braking System.
Machinery will be loaded via two 2.5 m hydraulic ramps – fitted with expamet to allow air flow and minimise fuel consumption. Multiple lashing points secure the load. Safety features include hydraulic steady legs, wide-load marker boards and red warning lights to alert motorists when ramps are extended for loading, as well as strobe lights mounted on the ramps, conspicuity markings and twin Hella lights to ensure safe working in hours of darkness. The trailer, finished in red paint, will be coupled to a high specification Scania R500 6x2 tag axle tractor unit, performing between 30 and 40 drops a week and covering up to 100,000 miles each year.

GB Digger Hire’s Managing Director Graham Byrne says: “The new step-frame will be an invaluable asset to our fleet, and a key factor in our ability to provide a reliable, high quality plant hire service to our customers throughout the UK.
“The technical expertise of the team at Andover Trailers is second-to-none: we told them what machinery the trailer would be transporting, and they designed it with all the devices and features necessary to optimise safe transportation and delivery of these machines.”
GB Digger Hire has a fleet of 100 machines for hire. It also sells ex-hire stock, and can supply new plant directly from a number of manufacturers.
