All Stars at Claremont High School
18 May 2011
Walking into the Claremont High School in Harrow, London, during a busy elevenses period in the new cafeteria, there is an impressive sense of quiet, organised focus.
pupils ranging in age from 11 to eighteen. The school is a multi-specialist school for performing arts, maths and computing and applied learning. Being a multi-specialist school enables Claremont to offer breadth, variety and choice, not only in specialist subjects but also in the core curriculum, with maths, science, English and humanities remaining a high priority.During the ‘noughties’, the school has benefitted from major investment, with a multi-purpose arts hall, an architect-designed sports complex and most recently total demolition of the lower school area to make way for a state of the art dining hall and eight new classrooms. Part of the latest exciting project included a brand new kitchen, servery and dining area. This is in stark contrast to the previous facility where the servery counter was sited in a corridor.
Involved in the planning, development and installation of the hospitality hall was the school’s Head teacher, Mr Molloy, Catering Equipment Distributor, Nelson Catering Equipment and Scott Taylor from Victor Manufacturing. With catering for up to 1000 people, twice each day, the kitchen was fitted out to make the food production process as streamlined as possible. Meanwhile the food servery needed to be efficient and practical for catering staff and pupils alike.
The dining hall layout is very similar to a commercial establishment, with the hot and cold counter serving food and drinks, and separate cash tills, condiment & cutlery and clear-up counters.
Victor’s custom-built counter, designed to complement the aesthetics of the dining hall features black granite counter tops and bright blue frontage with contrasting polished stainless steel pelmets and kick plinths. The counter, which utilises Synergy working component parts, is made up of two bain maries, one chilled multi-tier cabinet, a heated glass top with two sets of Gastronorm compatible heated drawers and hot cupboards to the rear.
Claremont High School provides two catering periods – elevenses, where hot paninis, bacon rolls, a selection of fruit and fruit drinks, plus sandwiches, muffins and pizza are on offer, and lunch at 1pm. Lunch offers a choice of one hot meat dish, one hot vegetarian dish and a cold meal option. Hot or cold puddings and fruit are also available.
Commented Peter Brewin, Marketing Manager at Victor, “As all the building work for the new wing had to be carried out during the summer holidays, we only had one day to install before the ceilings were fitted. It was quite tight, but everything came together and the counter was ready for action, come the first school morning.”
