FlexiDry fast drying floor screed which is one of the prime choices in sustainable construction was used for the subfloor.Extensive refurbishment and extension work is under progress at Wexham Court Primary School, Slough. The £3.5million project contracted to Mansell Construction Services Ltd. is being carried out in separate phases, with the construction of nine classrooms and associated facilities being carried out as the first phase.
Further renovation of the existing building, a new car park and multi-use games area will be included in the later phases once the initial work is completed as scheduled by August 2011. The construction work is in abidance with standards set by the Considerate Contractors Scheme, where special care is taken to ensure environmental care, cleanliness, neighborliness and several other factors that drive good construction practices.
The refurbishment project is also being carried out based on a sustainable plan, which will be evaluated under Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). This assessment method is considered the world’s foremost rating system for measuring a building’s environmental performance.
In addition to using ethically sourced and recyclable materials, extensive measures have also been adopted to ensure energy efficiency and minimal carbon emissions. As every building component from the building envelope and roofing to the flooring matters in maintaining the energy efficiency of a building, the building has been designed in such a way as to make the most of natural light and ventilation and minimize energy consumption.
FlexiDry, one of the most preferred screed choices for sustainable construction has been chosen for the subfloors. In addition to presenting exceptionally quick drying times ( from 21 days to 3 days as opposed to 110 days for normal screeds) some of the major reasons why FlexiDry is the prime choice for sustainable construction are:
High energy efficiency when used over underfloor heating
Reduced wastage and landfill as FlexiDry floor screeds can be mixed on demand and according to requirement
Does not require the use of polythene curing like other screeds
Reliable dry times allowing better project planning
The screeds can be recycled completely for further use
Once completed, the school is expected to be a landmark in the community, serving as a key initiative in sustainable construction.
