Solartron Gauging Solutions for Aerospace Components
03 May 2023
As the complexity and precision of aerospace parts become more demanding, the choice of aerospace sensors and measurement systems and the way that data is processed becomes more integral to the system and workstation design.
Solartron aerospace measuring instruments are precise, repeatable measurement sensors which can measure all kinds of delicate surfaces within the aerospace industry. In the aerospace industry, commercial aircraft engines have become larger and more fuel efficient, which results in higher demands for precisely built turbine blades and similar components. To check these, manufacturers must utilize sensors that can check quickly, precisely, and be able to output millions of data points for SPC analysis.
Jet Engine Turbine Blade Gauging
Solartron Metrology’s Digital sensors are the perfect solution for the measurement of jet engine turbine blades. When mounted to a custom gauge as shown below, complex curves can be immediately checked, with quick cycle times and immediate output of data to a PC or PLC. Part throughput is considerably quicker than alternative solutions, such as a CMM, thus saving in quality and production costs.
Solartron offers a variety of sensors for this type of application:
Digital Probes: Known as the workhorse of the industry, Solartron Digital Probes offer high resolution, excellent linearity, high data speed, and long-life precision bearings, allowing for the probes to maintain high-performance for millions of cycles.
Feather Touch and Ultra Feather Touch Probes: For more delicate surfaces, Solartron offers contact probes with forces as light as 0.05 N, with outstanding repeatability and durability. Like standard Solartron probes, they will last for millions of cycles.
Flexures and Block Gauges: Solartron offers specialised sensors that can check “harder to reach” dimensions or bores, all while maintaining excellent precision, durability, and repeatability.
Laser Triangulation: For surfaces where contact is not feasible, Solartron also offers compact, precise Orbit LT lasers. Included is Orbit LT2, which is designed for checking metallic surfaces.
Data Management
For output of digital sensor readings, Solartron Metrology utilizes the Orbit® Network. With Orbit, you can link up to 250 sensors on one modular stack, and then output to a PC, PLC, or Readout. This includes contact, non-contact, and 3rd party sensors. Readings can be output at up to 3906 readings, per module, per second.
On the PLC side, Orbit offers multiple gateways to Profinet®, Ethernet/IP®, EtherCAT®, CC-Link®, and Modbus based PLCs.
On the PC side, Solartron offers software drivers, so that Orbit can be linked into almost any SPC software.
But for large, complex applications, Solartron also offers Orbit Gauge Software 4.0. This powerful tool can be used for networking hundreds of measurement points, and easily outputting data in various SPC formats. Included in the software package is sequencing functions, handshaking for automation, as well as pre-loaded formulas. With this package, customers can take on the most complex of applications.
