Measurements supporting the global food system
02 June 2023
World Metrology Day is an annual event during which more than 80 countries celebrate the impact of measurement on our daily lives.
This date was chosen in recognition of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875, the beginning of formal international collaboration in metrology. This treaty provides the basis for a worldwide coherent measurement system that underpins scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, as well as the improvement of the quality of life and the protection of the global environment. The theme for World Metrology Day 2023 is Measurements supporting the global food system. This theme was chosen because of the increasing challenges of climate change, and global distribution of food in a world whose population reached 8 billion at the end of 2022.
Solartron Metrology celebrate World Metrology Day, discussing the vital part that the industry plays in preserving the Global Food System.
Agricultural Applications
Solartron Metrology has a strong foothold in agricultural expansion and influences our agronomy every day. Some of our Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) provide measurements in dendrometry.
Dendrometry is the measuring of various dimensions of trees and their fruits, such as diameter, size, shape, age, and volume. This allows for farmers to analyse the consequences of water stress, and other environmental effects, and potentially understand the irrigation process with more clarity.
Displacement sensors can be used to watch the growth process, and link it with the standard stimulus, water, sun exposure, pollution toxins, earth quality, and chemicals.
Ingress Protection of the sensors being used must be as high as possible, the stainless-steel body possessing the rating of IP67 to IP68, to protect from external environmental hostilities. This lengthens the sensor’s lifespan, and in the long run, aids economising for the future.
Dynamic Measurement of packaging
As population numbers rise, the demand for safe and efficient production of food subsequently increases the demand for quality packaging. Certain types of packaging require high precision solutions with high repeatability, and as a result, the development of said solutions excelled our innovation, leading to the engineering and design of solutions such as Solartron Metrology’s sensors and probes.
In beverage can factories, being material conscious is very important due to the rising prices of aluminium, leaving the production of cans a costly process with heavy losses if performed without the necessary checks. If the sheets of aluminium coming off the roll are not according to specifications, the machine will produce faulty, weak cans.
Choosing the Right Metrology Supplier for You
The Global Food System plays a vital role in day-to-day life, and the use of quality precision measurement technology is intrinsic to the high performance, and survivability, of these sectors.
To ensure the best high-quality output possible, the right metrology solutions partner must be chosen. The right solutions supplier will have the expertise, the experience, and a varied range of precision measurement technology to make sure that your metrology systems are suited to your needs, consistently performing to a high standard and deliver specially catered solutions to your problem.
