Urban Hygiene solution to stairwell fire hazard
13 July 2009
In the wake of yet another tower block tragedy it seems inevitable that paint once again has played its part.
So far details are sketchy but it appears the fire started in the stairwell and spread rapidly. Since the amount of combustible materials in your average tower block stairwell is almost zero, it is quite possible that the accelerant in was the paint on the walls.
Layers of paint that have been allowed to build up over the years pose a serious fire risk and can ignite and burn along the length of a wall faster than most people can run. The DTI cited this as a cause for concern back in 2005 when it released its Fire Safety Guide and Urban Hygiene Ltd has been campaigning for safer stairwells ever since.
The DTI guide suggests that if there are multiple layers of paint on a wall then the appointed fire safety officer should consider stripping the walls back to the bare substrate next time the building is redecorated. This is a very costly exercise, however there is an alternative, by eliminating the fire risk using a Class 0 fire upgrade coating.
This option is far cheaper than stripping and in some cases can be achieved in just two coats, In addition, if the fire upgrade coating is protected with a hard wearing, permanent anti graffiti coating, like easy-on, you may only need to redecorate once every 20 years.
