Galvanizers spurring on success of regeneration project

An ongoing partnership between two successful South Wales-based businesses is playing a major part in the ongoing renaissance of a local town.
Newport Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has provided their hot-dip galvanizing treatment to three tonnes of steel used on two regeneration projects in Ferndale, Rhondda Cynon Taff. Merthyr Tydfil-based engineering company Design and Manufacture Ltd used the galvanized steel to produce an intricate set of gates and railings that have been installed as part of a new walkway linking Lime Street with shops in the town centre. They have also manufactured a set of black railings, which are nearly 50 metres long and run along the town’s High Street through to the forecourt of The Anchor Hotel public house.
The two projects, which are worth more than £100,000, were commissioned by Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council as part of their ambitious plans to transform the town through funding secured from the Heads of the Valleys regeneration programme.
Design and Manufacture Ltd worked alongside renowned artist Timothy Clapcott, who was appointed by the Council to come up with conceptual ideas for the projects. Once the steel was galvanized and Design and Manufacture had created the railings and gates, the artworks were given a stove enamel powder coated finish.
Phil Corke, Director for Design and Manufacture Ltd, revealed: “We have worked with Newport Galvanizers on a number of projects over the last few years and we’ve found them to be reliable partners who continually provide us with a first-class service. For this project, it was absolutely essential that the steel was galvanized to a particularly high standard, as the fencing and gates were very detailed and we didn’t want to have to spend too much time de-nibbing and smoothing the final finish.”
