Galvanizers play part in Pier project

A leading galvanizing company has played its part in a renovation project that has restored a vital passenger gateway to a seaside town.
Eastleigh-based Wessex Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, was called upon to provide its hot dip galvanizing treatment to around 140 tonnes of steel used to carry out emergency repairs to the near 200-year-old Ryde Pier, which is home to the ferry service that connects the Isle of Wight with Portsmouth. Last July, the Pier failed a routine maintenance inspection and had to be closed to passenger vehicles, after it was discovered that many of the steel beams making up the 660 metre, Grade II-listed structure were rusted beyond repair. The steel galvanized by Wessex Galvanizers was used by Poole-based engineering firm Ace Welding to replace the corroded beams as part of a £5 million renovation project.
Richard Whiddett, Commercial Manager for Wessex Galvanizers, commented: “Galvanizing the steel, which involved it being dipped in molten zinc at a temperature of 450 °C, will help to ensure the Pier is provided with a long-lasting protection against rust and corrosion.”
“It was essential that this project was carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible, to try and minimise the disruption caused to the local community,” said Steve Norman, of Ace Welding. “Wessex Galvanizers provided us with a hugely professional service and very prompt turnaround, which enabled us to complete the job.”
The Pier – which was built in 1814 – reopened to vehicles in March, with new speed limits and weight restrictions put in place to protect the structure from future damage.
