CEX Specify Hardware from DED in all their Retail Outlets

18 October 2010

CEX Choose the Star Micronics TSP100 and the TSP828 Printers along with the Honeywell MK9520 Scanner from DED Limited for use in all Stores

Buying and selling a range of technology and entertainment products such as mobile phones, video games, DVD’s and computers, CEX were founded in 1992 in London and now have stores across the UK as well as in Spain and the USA. Choosing to standardise on receipt and label printers from Star Micronics and barcode scanners from Honeywell across all of their UK stores, CEX are ensuring their hardware stands up to the challenges a busy Retail environment provides. Identifying the need to move forward with a USB based EPOS system, CEX decided to replace their in store receipt and price label printers. Having previously used the Star Micronics TSP700 and the TSP400, CEX were looking for a ‘drop in’ replacement for their old printers. Initially looking at the direct replacement for the serial TSP700 they were using, the TSP100 printer was mentioned as a possible option instead. Offering a low purchase cost, low running costs and all accessories in one box, including the power cable, CEX decided it was an excellent replacement for the TSP700. Commenting on this selection, Jo Leslie, First Line IT Support Supervisor at CEX said “The TSP100 is very popular due to the low running costs and its ability to use the same paper as the TSP700 that we previously used.” Printing at up to 250mm/second, the TSP100 is ideal for the retail environment in terms of footprint and print speed. Finding a replacement for the in store price label printer was not quite so straight forward, the previously used Star Micronics TSP400 had been discontinued so finding a ‘drop in’ replacement was unlikely. Initially trialling the TSP800, CEX found it would not work with the specific labels that they used without making alterations to the printer. Moving over to trialling the TSP828 dedicated label printer instead, they found no issue printing the transmissive labels they needed to use. The TSP828 offered the flexibility they required with no problems - it even turned out to be a more cost effective solution than the discontinued TSP400. The Honeywell MK9520 barcode scanner was not a new selection on CEXs’ part, but a purchase made safe in the knowledge that it had been used for many years with great success. Due to its simplicity, lack of software configuration required and plug and play ease of use, it was easy to continue to use this hand held scanner as the main point of sale barcode reader in store. The TSP100 futurePRNT series is the first range of receipt printers to offer USB only receipt printing on the market today. The power that the USB communication interface provides has allowed Star Micronics to build a software driven PoS printer. The advantages of such a receipt printer are evident for retail applications. USB provides an immediate Plug 'n' Play installation which reduces the integration time to minutes. The TSP100 futurePRNT thermal receipt printer is provided with all standard operating systems drivers (Windows, Linux and Mac) and specialty drivers such as OPOS and JavaPOS. All TSP100 printers are covered by a 4 year RTB warranty. Star has included simple utilities in the drivers that will enhance retail applications. TSP828 high speed wide label printer is a very fast thermal label printer which features a unique adjustable paper width between 41mm and 108mm wide and features sensors for both black mark and transmissive label gap detection. Designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of applications, the TSP828L features a printer speed of 150mm per second and print resolution of 203dpi. The TSP800 uses Star's simple "Drop-In & Print" paper loading feature and can accept paper rolls of various widths. An external paper feed path for large diameter and fanfold labels is supplied as standard. Interfacing is no problem thanks to both ESC/POS and the traditional Star mode. With its futuristic design and advanced scanning system, Voyager is the most advanced single-line, hand-held bar code scanner on the market today. The Voyager MS9540 features Metrologic’s proprietary CodeGate technology. Codegate is an intuitive scanning system that is ideal for all scanning applications, including menu-scanning, PoS, document processing and inventory to name but a few. Featuring both in-stand and out-of-stand operation, Voyager can be used as both a hand-held and fixed projection scanner. While resting in the stand, the CodeGate button (MS9540 only) is deactivated, making Voyager a presentation scanner. The feature-packed Voyager comes equipped with PowerLink user-replaceable cables and power supply, MetroSelect® onecode programming, MetroSet® Windows-based software configuration utility, Bits n' Pieces® data editing utility and an Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) deactivation option. …ends REF: 12382-267 Issued By: Jeanette Burton About DED Limited Formed in 1983, DED Limited based in Lydd, Kent.
